Bringing AI Into a Manchester Team Without Betting the House
Manchester has one of the fastest-growing tech economies in the UK, and with it a flood of AI vendors promising transformation. If you run a product or an operations team here, the hard part isn't finding AI — it's adding it without handing your roadmap to a black box or spending six figures to find out it doesn't work.
Start with a problem, not a platform
The teams that get value from artificial intelligence start from a specific, expensive problem: support tickets that take too long, documents nobody has time to read, a feature that would be great "if only it understood the user". They do not start by buying an AI platform and looking for a use.
Buy the outcome, not the technology. If a pilot can't prove value on your real data in a few weeks, it isn't ready to be a project.
The pilot-first approach
A sensible AI engagement looks like this:
- Discovery — an honest look at whether the problem is actually an AI problem.
- A small paid pilot — built on your real data, proving (or disproving) the value cheaply.
- Production build — only if the pilot earns it, with proper evaluation and handover.
That sequence caps your downside. You never spend big before you've seen it work.
Augment your team, don't replace your stack
Most Manchester teams I work with already have good developers — what they're missing is deep AI-infrastructure and MLOps experience. The best setup is embedded: I bring the AI serving, fine-tuning and retrieval depth; your team keeps ownership and learns the system. Everything is handed over documented and runnable by your own people.
Keep control of your data and your costs
Two traps catch teams here. The first is data: routing everything through a third-party API can be a compliance and confidentiality risk. The second is cost: per-token API bills scale with success, which is a strange thing to be punished for. Running open models on your own infrastructure fixes both — see AI for Manchester teams and LLM serving.
