It Plays Diablo Now. Soon It Plays You.
On Saturday morning Elon Musk said his machine can now play Diablo. Read the job advert behind it, and the game stops being a game.
The post landed at 7:34 on Saturday morning. Digital Optimus, the agent Tesla builds with xAI, can now play Diablo by “looking at the screen like a human”, and the goal is to “generalize across all games”.
The primary record

Digital Optimus can play about halfway through the Diablo campaign so far just by looking at the screen like a human. Skill at Counter-Strike and other fast games is good too. League is also in training. Goal is to generalize across all games.
In reply to @teslayoda, who flagged the Tesla job. Reproduced; not a live embed.
Read quickly, it is a gift to anyone who wanted someone to play with: a partner who is always online, never bored, never leaves the lobby. For the kid who eats lunch alone, that is not small.
Spend ten minutes in Tesla’s own hiring pages and the friend vanishes. The Realtime Games role sits on the “Digital Optimus Gaming Track”. The advert says it will “browse the web, use professional apps, and play AAA games”, and that Tesla will “measure transfer across different games, embodiments, and general computer use”. Then: integrate those agents into “Full Self-Driving (FSD) and physical Optimus”.

The playmate is a rehearsal
Musk named the project on 11 March 2026 (CNBC) and called it Macrohard, “a funny reference to Microsoft”. xAI’s Grok is the navigator; a Tesla-built agent is the reflex. “In principle,” he wrote, “it is capable of emulating the function of entire companies.”
That ambition has two bodies. A second advert reads: "Digital Optimus is the software counterpart to our physical humanoid." A third says the models will run “self-driving cars, Optimus robots, and digital agents”. They train on “immediate closed-loop feedback from vehicles, physical robots, and real-time computer interfaces”. One mind, three keyboards.
The friend and the replacement are the same artefact. The game is the audition.
The man who needed a second player
The irony is neat. For years Musk has been dogged by the claim that other people levelled his own Diablo and Path of Exile 2 characters, that the top of the ladder was not always him. Now he is building the teammate that plays in his place, and plans to sell it to everyone.

Where I slow down
This is a tweet and a set of job adverts, not a product. I used Tesla’s own careers pages; the adverts are the primary record. The adverts name the transfer but publish no benchmark showing it works, and “generalize across all games” is a goal, not a result. The near-term use is dull: agents that file tickets. The companion reading is mine; Musk has not promised a friend.
Two things would change my mind: a published transfer benchmark, or a consumer companion that ships. Until then, the playful announcement and the hiring page are saying different things, and the hiring page is the honest one.
Readout: what is confirmed, and what is not
- Confirmed (Tesla Careers, opened directly): the Realtime Games role on the "Digital Optimus Gaming Track" says the agent will "browse the web, use professional apps, and play AAA games", will "measure transfer across different games, embodiments, and general computer use", and will "integrate agent systems into Full Self-Driving (FSD) and physical Optimus".
- Confirmed (Tesla Careers): a second Digital Optimus role, Computer Use Agents, is "modeled after real-time control policies, rather than screenshot-based VLM agents", and integrates with "Full Self-Driving (FSD) and Optimus"; an infrastructure role calls Digital Optimus "the software counterpart to our physical humanoid".
- Confirmed (Elon Musk on X, 10 October 2026, 7:34am): "Digital Optimus can play about halfway through the Diablo campaign so far just by looking at the screen like a human ... League is also in training. Goal is to generalize across all games."
- Confirmed (CNBC, 11 March 2026): the Macrohard / Digital Optimus unveiling, Grok as navigator plus a Tesla agent, and the "emulating the function of entire companies" line. CNBC and the NYT (2-3 February 2026) report SpaceX's acquisition of xAI at a $1.25tn combined value.
- Reported, not confirmed: that any of this transfers. No transfer benchmarks, no shipped consumer product, and no stated launch date were published with the gaming claim.
- Interpretation, not a Musk statement: the reading that the playmate is a rehearsal for a labour-replacing agent. The evidence is the adverts' own transfer and FSD/Optimus lines, nothing more.
